About Ecology Vision

Empowering our community to protect, enrich, and restore the natural taonga of Aotea

The Aotea Ecology Vision initiative, was initiated by Aotea Great Barrier Local Board, with theaim of establishing a community vision for the enhancement and management of the island’s natural environment. Funded by Aotea Great Barrier Local Board and Auckland Council, and managed by Envirokiwi, this initiative supports the Aotea community to protect, enrich and restore our island’s ecosystems.

Working alongside the Aotea community — mana whenua, conservation groups, sanctuaries, trusts, and agencies — the Aotea Ecology Vision reflects a shared commitment to te taiao o Aotea. The project aims to inspire and enable community-led ecological restoration across the island, strengthening both people and nature.

Initially the Ecology Vision focused on outcomes supporting the establishment of community conservation groups, community activities and initiatives like the Aotea trap library.

Today, the Ecology Vision focuses on supporting projects with practical and project advice, community outreach and events to further connect the stakeholders, community and visitors to conservation on Aotea.
